What a verdict means

When we say a bag fits, we mean its published outside dimensions fall within the limit that airline publishes for that fare, as we read it on the date shown beside the source.

We do not observe gates. We have not tested your bag against that airline's sizer. Airlines change their limits without notice, run different rules on different aircraft and routes, and enforce the same published policy very unevenly — which is why the tool asks how much risk you want to take rather than pretending there is one answer.

A verdict is our best reading of the published rule. The gate agent is the one who decides.

Where the numbers come from

Airline limits are read from the airline's own baggage pages. Bag dimensions are, in almost every case, the manufacturer's published figures — we have measured no bags ourselves, and we say so on every page rather than implying otherwise.

Manufacturers are not consistent about whether wheels and handles are included, and some publish only the packing space inside. Where a figure does not meet our standard, the bag is shown but never put forward as a recommendation.How we work it outsets out the whole ladder.
